8 Exceptional Things Successful People Do On Weekends

Emails. Zoom Calls. Meetings. Reports. Presentations. Repeat. This might be the story of your worklife, and it might be a very successful one at that. But while your career provides you with a good salary and a high degree of satisfaction, it is important not to neglect the weekends! This is a time to unwind as well as contemplate. At least set aside a few days for this purpose! Although it’s easy to overlook this fact, how you spend your weekend has a significant effect on your work performance. Here are eight weekend habits of successful people that will help you maximize your efforts Monday through Friday.

1. Reboot

Every once in a while, when your computer slows down, the tried and true remedy is to reboot it, right? It starts up again, ready to carry out your requests! Successful people reboot themselves on weekends so that when Monday arrives, they’re up for the rigors of another workweek. Rebooting could mean mastering the art of meditation. Doing breathing techniques for 30 minutes. Engaging in deep reflection. Clearing your mind of negative thoughts and focusing on the positives. Incorporating all of these into your weekend “reboot” routine will make you feel brand new!

2. Reflect

During the week, you’re so busy working that it leaves you very little time to actually sit back and reflect on your performance. The weekend provides an opportunity for evaluation without distractions. What were some of the small and big wins that you experienced the previous week? Where can you find room for improvement? How were your interactions with supervisors, colleagues, and those working under you? Don’t reflect in general terms about your performance, think about specific, tangible goals that you want to achieve and when you’d like to achieve them. Develop a mindset where you give yourself credit for the positive achievements from the past week while holding yourself accountable for the things that might not have worked.

3. Never Sleep In

It’s easy to succumb to the temptation of sleeping late on weekends, especially when you have no obligations. But successful people maintain the exact same sleeping schedule 7 days a week. So if you go to bed at 10pm on weeknights and wake up at 6am, continue to do so on Saturdays and Sundays. Focus on quality sleep over quantity. People who wake up early on weekends are far more productive than those who spend their Saturday late nights scrolling through their social media feed and then crawling out of bed at 9am.

4. Practice Self-Care

If you are an exceptionally driven person, you might feel like nothing you do is good enough. Perhaps you aren’t moving up the career ladder as quickly as you expect. Alternatively, you may be excessively critical of yourself for achieving success only 9 out of 10 times last week, despite your demand for perfection. Maybe you measure success in terms of how many hours of overtime you do. In the long run, this is going to have an adverse effect on your mental and physical health. You’re bound to burn yourself. You will lose motivation by setting unrealistic expectations for yourself. So instead of focusing exclusively on the things you perceive as inadequate, remind yourself that you’ve come pretty far in life. You are deserving of the success you have right now, and you will be equally worthy of the success you have down the road. But take things one step at a time. And remember, practice self-care as a routine, not merely something you do when you’re feeling on edge.

5. Plan For The Upcoming Week

Here are some words that successful people live by: You can’t plan for the past, but you can bring the future into the present! When Sunday evening arrives, take some time to plan out the upcoming week. Pull up your work calendar and see what meetings/appointments are taking place, which projects are due, etc. How many times has a creative idea popped into your mind only after a meeting has ended? By doing some advanced planning, you’ll be able to carry out your role more efficiently, with more organization, better coordination, proper direction, and, yes, more creativity!

6. Spend Quality Time With Family

No matter how much money you make or how high you climb the career ladder, never forget that when it comes down to it, your family is the top priority in your life. Successful people set aside time for “date night” with their spouse. They attend their children’s soccer games. They go on weekend getaways with the family. There is simply no substitute for time spent with the family. They are the ones who keep you grounded.

7. Take Time To Declutter

When we say “declutter,” we aren’t talking about tidying up your living room or organizing your garage, although those aren’t bad ideas either! We mean you need to work on the aspects of your life that are mentally weighing you down. People commonly create obstructions in their lives that prevent them from getting ahead. The end result is a feeling of inadequacy, frustration, guilt, and regret, among other consequences. When you free yourself from the things that are holding you back, you gain confidence. You allow yourself to be authentic. Even if you’re scared of what others think, you still share your ideas in the meeting!

8. Network

If you ask successful people how they go about influencing others, they will tell you it starts with making meaningful connections. Networking doesn’t have to be confined to work-related seminars or conventions either. Become a member of your local book club. Join a civic organization in your community. Or if you’re into spontaneity, striking up a conversation with a stranger on the subway, at the park, or at a cafe is just as effective for building connections with others!
