Given the nature of the internet, this theory began as a playful post on a Brazilian fan blog in 2005. The blog even opened with a disclaimer stating the whole thing was made up. However, the impactful headline, “Avril está morta” (“Avril is dead”), was all that was needed. By 2011, the hoax had somehow grown legs, arms, eyeliner, and a whole new identity online. Forums and Tumblr posts dissected every eyebrow arch, fashion choice, and vocal pitch change Avril ever displayed.
